What you need to know about bar charts

Ask 24 pupils how they usually travel to school. Eight walk, six cycle and ten take the bus. Each travel method is a category: a named group. Its frequency is the number of pupils in it. Drawing one bar for each category lets you compare the counts at a glance. A taller bar means more pupils, provided every bar uses the same scale.

Read and compare categories

What the problem asks: How many more pupils take the bus than cycle?

How to solve it: Read 10 and 6, then subtract: 10 − 6 = 4 pupils.

Construct a chart

What the problem asks: Draw bars for counts 3, 7 and 5.

How to solve it: Choose a scale reaching at least seven, label both axes and categories, then draw equal-width bars to those heights.

Check a misleading display

What the problem asks: A chart compares 50 and 60 but begins its vertical scale at 40. Can bar lengths suggest a doubling?

How to solve it: Yes: the visible lengths are 10 and 20. The true values have ratio 60/50 = 1.2, not 2. Explain the shortened baseline.

Compare proportions in unequal groups

What the problem asks: In group A, 6 of 15 pupils cycle; in group B, 8 of 25 cycle. Which group has the greater proportion?

How to solve it: A raw count is unfair when group sizes differ. Divide each count by its own group total: A gives 6/15 = 40%; B gives 8/25 = 32%. Group A has the greater share even though group B has more cyclists.

A reliable routine

Build a category bar chart

Use separate bars for named categories or discrete numerical values. Each height must follow the same scale so comparison is meaningful.

  1. Label the categories and the quantity counted.
  2. Choose equal numerical steps and start the count scale at zero.
  3. Draw equal-width bars with gaps, reaching the correct values.
  4. Add a title; use a key if more than one dataset is displayed.

Check: A histogram is different: grouped continuous data is represented using bar area and, for unequal intervals, frequency density. A numerical category such as ‘number of pets’ may also be shown using a vertical line chart.
