Know what passing means
Set the right target before choosing topics
Grade 4 is commonly called a standard pass; grade 5 is commonly called a strong pass. That label does not replace the actual requirement for your next course, apprenticeship or job. Find the grade you need, your tier and the evidence gap between your recent work and that target.
Available grades are 1–5. It contains a greater proportion of accessible content, but you still need accurate methods across a broad specification. If your target is grade 4 and Higher mocks remain below grade 5 territory, ask your school to compare how many accessible marks you can reliably collect on each tier.
Available grades are 4–9. It includes more demanding content and a grade below 4 may be awarded where the published boundary conditions are met. Tier entry is an evidence-based school or exam-centre decision, not a shortcut based on one mock.
Do not plan around one fixed raw mark. Grade boundaries are set for each exam series, so use several recent papers and your teacher’s guidance.
AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR GCSE Maths qualifications each use three papers. Marks combine across the series, so one difficult paper does not decide the final grade alone.
A boundary is evidence, not a target
What recent grade 4 boundaries actually looked like
For Pearson Edexcel 1MA1, the published June grade 4 boundaries below changed in every series. Foundation and Higher percentages cannot be compared as measures of paper difficulty because the papers target different grade ranges.

Use this correctly: mark a paper with the boundary from that same board, tier and series. Do not assume next year will use the same mark or set your practice target exactly on the boundary.
Post-16 and resit learners
Plan around readiness, not only the November window
GCSE English and Maths can be retaken in the autumn or summer. In England, students without grade 4 must normally continue approved maths study under the 16–19 funding condition, but the current DfE guidance says this is a study requirement—not an automatic requirement to sit an exam. Your school or college should consider whether you are ready before entering you for November.
If November is realistic, use the four-week loop below and confirm entry dates with your centre. If core methods are still insecure, more teaching before a later series may be the better route.

Turn a score into a list of repairable marks
Work without notes and use the permitted calculator conditions.
Use the official mark scheme; do not record only the final score.
Separate missing knowledge, wrong method, arithmetic, interpretation and timing.
Prefer gaps that recur and unlock questions in several topic areas.
Build dependable marks
Secure connected core skills before chasing rare hard questions
No short list predicts an exam, and you should cover your full tier specification. When a pass is not yet secure, these connected foundations are sensible early priorities because later questions repeatedly depend on them. For a longer plan, see the topic-weighting guide in How to revise.
Negative numbers, decimals, fractions, percentages, rounding and estimation support work across every strand.
Share in a ratio, use multipliers, convert units and connect speed, density and scale.
Simplify expressions, substitute accurately, solve linear equations and read coordinates and graphs.
Use perimeter, area, volume, units, transformations, Pythagoras and right-triangle reasoning appropriate to your tier.
Read tables and charts, calculate averages and range, and compare distributions using evidence.
List outcomes systematically, use probabilities between 0 and 1 and apply expected frequency.
This gives no finish line and makes it easy to watch videos without testing yourself.

A short rescue plan
A four-week GCSE Maths pass plan
Use 30–45 minute sessions on most study days. Adjust around school and other subjects, but keep the cycle of attempt, feedback, repair and delayed retry.
Diagnose and stabilise

- Start an error log with exact first mistakes.
Build connected skills
- Focus on ratio, percentages and equations.
- Practise one direct and one worded form.

Week 4
Rehearse the complete exam process
Use full papers only as feedback. Do not spend the final week collecting scores without repairing the repeated causes.
Rehearse the correct calculator condition, equipment and question order.
Record lost marks by cause and identify two repair priorities.
Study one explanation, then solve fresh similar questions unaided.
Return without notes. A copied correction is not secure learning.
Short retrieval, sleep, equipment and calm pacing matter more than an exhausted all-night session.
Convert knowledge into marks
Use an exam routine that protects partial credit
A pass plan is not only about learning more topics. You also need to expose the mathematics you already know so the examiner can award it.

Important: do not depend on predicted-topic lists. Content permitted by your specification may appear on any paper; use predictions only as optional prompts after proper coverage.
Keep effort connected to marks
Common mistakes when trying to pass GCSE Maths
A checklist measures exposure, not independent performance. Test each skill without notes.
Fractions, negatives and place value can remove marks from otherwise correct algebra, geometry and statistics.
If the same method gap survives, another full paper measures it again rather than fixing it.
Collect accessible marks first, mark the question and return with the remaining time.
Show the mathematical setup. A mistyped final value should not hide a correct method.
Boundaries vary by series. Track the skills and marks you can reproduce, not one assumed cutoff.

What grade is a pass in GCSE Maths?
Grade 4 is commonly described as a standard pass and grade 5 as a strong pass. A school, course, apprenticeship or employer may set its own entry requirement, so check the requirement that applies to you.
Is Foundation or Higher easier to pass?
Foundation assesses grades 1–5 and Higher grades 4–9. The right entry depends on your current evidence and target, not only on which paper looks easier. Discuss the decision with your school or exam centre.
Do I need to learn every topic to get grade 4?
You should not deliberately ignore the specification, because any permitted content may be assessed. If time is short, first secure connected core skills and use diagnostics to decide what to repair next.
How many past papers should I do?
