Show enough working

Mark schemes commonly separate method, accuracy and independent marks. Exact labels vary by board, but a correct method can earn credit even after a later arithmetic slip.

Use an approved calculator

A scientific calculator is the usual choice for calculator papers. Practise with the model you will take in and check that it meets your school’s current exam rules.

Answer every question

There is no question choice. If you are stuck, write a useful formula or first step, move on, then return after securing accessible marks elsewhere.

Use topic weightings as a guide, not a prediction

The proportions are approximate across the qualification and an individual paper can vary. Combine them with your own diagnostic: high-weight weak areas come first.

Active practice

Use the same six-part loop for every topic

Each session should produce evidence: attempted questions, corrections and a scheduled return. Watching or reading can support the loop, but it cannot replace unaided practice.

Build a GCSE Maths revision timetable you can keep

Count the full weeks from today to your first paper, then use the matching plan below. Summer GCSE papers are normally in May and June, but your own exam timetable is the date that matters. Plan sessions, not vague hours.

Use papers at the right time

Turn past papers into feedback, not just a score

A full paper is a measurement tool. Topic questions teach a method; timed sections build method recognition and pace; full papers test the complete performance.

After every timed paper

  1. Mark in a different colour and total the score honestly.
  2. Label each lost mark: did not know, chose wrong method, arithmetic, notation, units, rounding or time.
  3. Redo every accessible question before reading the full solution.
  4. Create a short question set for the two most important patterns.
  5. Reattempt those skills after a delay; do not count a copied correction as secure.

Calculator habit: use the model you will take into the exam, but still show substitutions and intermediate working. For non-calculator practice, write exact values until the question permits rounding.
